American Vacation

DSCF0908

Ágúst and I took a vacation in the US, landing in NYC and driving down to Virginia, then eventually Corolla in North Carolina for a week at the beach. This was one of the many rest stops we stopped to stretch our legs and get something to drink or eat. I loved the pea green water tower over the red and yellow structure.

DSCF0862

View from my grandmother's porch in West Virginia. I love the rolling mountains going back and back.

DSCF0851

One of the many gardens in Colonial Williamsburg. I loved the bright green tree front and center.

DSCF0850

A bee in a sunflower.

DSCF0847

The even lines of this house with the nice green hedge attracted my eye.

DSCF0843

So peaceful in some of these yards. I loved the pink flowering tree, and if you look at the full size, there is a male and female cardinal (Virginia's state bird) perched on the fence.

DSCF0832

A professor's lecture perch at William and Mary college. The glowing, symmetrical windows with the dark paneling made this a nice shot to me.

DSCF0831

Love the old map, and candles on either side of the fireplace.

DSCF0829

The front view of one of William and Mary's original lecture halls.

DSCF0824

And one of the gardens on the side.

DSCF0804

An out of business Chinese restaurant in downtown Richmond, Virginia. I liked the faded cracking paint.

DSCF0799

Virginia Science Museum. This was an epic train station at one point.

DSCF0791

A pool on the 2nd floor of a parking garage at the Comfort Inn on Broad Street.

DSCF0790

The elevator area at the Comfort Inn. I loved the park bench and big window.

DSCF0787

Lots of Richmond looks like this, but the sunset made it somehow beautiful.

DSCF0786

Inside a parking garage. I loved the rhythm of all the poles and glowing light from outside.

DSCF0779

A big, hot, desolate parking lot.

DSCF0754

View from behind our beach rental house. It just felt so peaceful and beach like, it captured my relaxed feelings of the week.

DSCF0741

The Wright Brother's monument in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The sky was beautiful that day.

DSCF0641

Beautiful sunset in West Point, Virginia.

DSCF0627

While we were waiting in the heat at Richmond International Airport, I saw this massive area under construction, and it perfectly captured the blazing heat we felt the entire week.

Summer shots

DSCF0300

Summer is in full swing. This is a shot of my back concrete fence, and I really liked the texture, the light blue paint on the left side, and the bent nails in the upper center.

DSCF0372

This ship was really massive and the paint job was super fresh. I like how you get a sense of it's size compared to the ships, ocean, and mountain in the background.

DSCF0381

One reason I'm glad the X100 does macro. This is one of my husband's flowers in full bloom, and it was so beautiful.

DSCF0398

The interior of the very first museum built in Iceland to house a single artist's works, Kjarvalsstaðir.

DSCF0408

The ceiling had a ton of great patterns.

DSCF0414

A separate exhibit, but I enjoyed the giant blue balled up paper and the painting behind. Seemed really serene somehow.

Sunny England

DSCF0120

Ah sunny England. I took off for a three day trip primarily in Nottingham, but also in London. The first shot is from the plane and I really liked the brighter green fields against the darker grass and trees.

DSCF0122

There was so much interesting architecture radically different from what we have here in Iceland.

DSCF0123

Lots of it had interesting contrast on otherwise boring brick facades.

DSCF0125

This one I largely liked the ramp sloping down in front.

DSCF0138

A beautiful cemetery near my hotel, bright and sunny. I had to hold my camera over my head and place it on a wall to capture this.

DSCF0139

On this one I really like the deep blue shadow area with soft yellow sunlit top.

DSCF0141

Once perspective is corrected, I just love the symmetry and rhythm of some of these buildings. The bright green city bus adds to the interest as well.

DSCF0143

This one I liked the dirtiness and the concrete sphere.

DSCF0145

These were just half painted boarded over windows, but I liked how they looked like hung canvas paintings. The woman in front serves for scale.

DSCF0161

I really liked the pattern of these leaves against the wall, and only after taking it did I notice the lens flare which I feel adds to the interest of the photo.

Night shots

DSCF2244.jpg

I really love night shots, the lighting is so different from what we see in the day, and comes from more angles and sources than just the sky/sun.  On this shot I liked the blue glow of the lower floor, and orange glow of the upper. The way it struck the grass in front is what really pulled me in.

DSCF2248.jpg

Landspitali the official Icelandic hospital. I like the helicopter pad on the roof and all the glow coming out.

DSCF2281.jpg

Was out biking to deliver my treats for Hveiti og Smjör and saw this crow perched atop a light pole. I like the gentle swoop of the lines, and harsh outline of the pole and bird against the soft clouds.

DSCF2358-Edit.jpg

Tjordninn, one of my favorite photographic scenes, the pond behind the city hall. In this photo the lake had frozen, then only the top thawed, for a glassy perfect mirror surface. This was made from 4 photos stitched, each was a ten second exposure.

DSCF2366.jpg

Another night shot. I loved the reflection in the puddle and leaning lightpole.

DSCF2433

One of my favorite things about Reykjavik is the constant mountains in the background, reminding me of the nature all around.

DSCF2438

The way the light hit Halgrimskirkja was only like this for maybe 5 minutes, and I so rarely see it from behind, I took this shot.

DSCF2439

I always like scenes with two different lighting sources. The warm sunlight in the foreground, and dark foreboding rain clouds in the background made me like this shot.

DSCF2448

The reflection from all the windows of the building behind me striking this one were enticing. I also like the door that opens to nothing.

DSCF1679-Edit.jpg

Another long exposure stitch of tjordninn.

DSCF1964-Edit.jpg

And one from during the day.
